“I Need A Hero” (from Shrek)
HELPFUL HINTS:
· CHARACTER: Commit to this with personality (Either inspired by the Fairy Godmother, or your own invented character)
· MOOD: Show the big contrast between the ‘lost and lonely’ mood of the first verse – and the ‘high energy, determined’ mood of the chorus and the rest
· MOVEMENT: Use gestures, body movements around the stage that match the meaning of the words. You can almost perform it like you are at your own concert.
· INTERACTION:
o SOLO: Interact with us (the audience) with your facial expressions, eye contact and movement as if you are having the conversation with us, asking us the questions, wanting your hero to be IN the audience!
o PARTNER: Interact with your partner to fit the drama of the song (this could really WOW us), but also connect with us the audience. If doing small chunks together, you could be two people both after a hero. Or if doing 1 big chunk each at a time, the other person could act out the hero figure you are wanting.
Spoken Dialogue:
Ladies and Gentlemen, I’d like to dedicate this song to Princess Fiona and Prince Shrek
Prince: Princess my Fiona, Would you honour me with a dance? [Ignore other dialogue from here]
[Verse 1]
Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight
upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn
And I dream of what I need
[Chorus]
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero
'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero
'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
Larger than life...
